Embroidery: Polish Dancewear ...

Barbara brought along her Polish embroidery to show us (during the course of our session) her stages of final completion ... plus we saw how long it actually takes her!

When she first started this on-going project (now several years ago), Barbara tested many methods of 'transferring design to fabric' as the ground fabric of velvet was not especially easy to embroider directly on. After many trials and samples, a specific woven (dressmaking) interfacing was found to be the best choice for use as 'waste canvas' ... it was simple to mark with the floral design, it remained in place on the velvet with minimal movement and was subsequently (relatively) easy to remove after stitching.

The embroidery design is first drawn on the selected interfacing fabric, this is then placed directly over the velvet, the design embroidered and when completed, the waste-canvas interfacing is 'pulled & cut away' to leave just the embroidery.

Left, is the embroidered design on the 'waste canvas', ready to begin pulling away the threads.

Right are 3 different stages of progress - all being worked during our group session.

For your interest:

this stage alone (ie. pulling of the waste-canvas threads),
took Barbara almost 2 hours !!!
